Every day, NASA presents us with a stunning view of the Universe in the “Astronomy Picture of the Day.” Today (6), the space agency highlighted a celestial battle between stars and dust in the Carina Nebula.

The image was captured by the Hubble Space Telescope and reveals a cosmic spectacle within the region known as the Mystic Mountain, composed of columns of dust that, despite their opaque appearance, are predominantly made up of transparent hydrogen gas.
In this celestial scene, newly formed and massive stars unleash an energetic dance, with their light and winds gradually evaporating the stellar nurseries where they were born. Some of these columns of dust, resembling celestial torches, are actually illuminated by nearby stars, creating a beautiful ‘confusion’ of light and shadow.
The Carina Nebula, officially known as HH1066, stretches for almost a light-year and is approximately 7,500 light-years away from Earth.
